The bunad came into use at the beginning of the 19th century. It was common in Flesberg to use several stacks on top of each other, up to seven pieces. Today, only two or three layers are normally used. The bunad has changed quite a bit over the years, depending on what kind of material was available and what was fashionable at the time. Therefore, there are several variants of the Flesbergbunad. The picture shows Kongsberg's variant. Both black and dark blue are used for skirts and waist. The shirt has embroidery on the neck and cuffs, and the headdress has long, wide ribbons to tie under the chin. There are also capes and coats for the bunad.
