Barley grain ring / bøheradsring

The pendants hanging and dangling from the barley grain rings were meant to represent - yes, exactly - barley grain. This was an expression of a desire for fertility. Therefore, these barley grain rings are very feminine in their traditional symbolic use. These brooches were common in Øst-Telemark, and over time they became even more ornate, so for the belt skirt we got the so-called bøheradsrings. In some cases, they were given colored stones. Because people loved colors and wanted to show their joy of life. And perhaps a little jab at the rather pietistic Christianity that prevailed at the time. But on occasions that required a little more dignity and reflection, such as funerals, they could easily hide the colors and "joy for life" by turning the brooch upside down.
