Work on the Follo bunad began in 1954, the first proposal was rejected but the second proposal was approved. The starting point they used for the second proposal was a bridal gown from Herrefosser in Rakkestad. The first Follobunad was completed in 1970.

Most people choose bright and gilded silver for their bunad, but some choose to use oxidized silver.
