On this website, we have categorized brooches and accessories by bunad to make sure that you only choose from what belongs on this national costume.
Of course, there is no rule for how much silver you have to have on a bunad, and you don’t have to buy everything at once. On the whole, you are quite free to choose silver from among the items listed here.
Color of bunad silver
For some costumes, you can also choose the color of the silver, which can be either oxidized (dark silver color) old gold plated (dark gold plating), light/white silver or gold plated. It’s also possible to mix and match many of the pieces. What’s more, the different types of silver come in many different variations. Take your pick, it’s all part of making your own unique bunad.
Perhaps you’re feeling extra daring and want a little more play in your brooch? We have a range of two-tone brooches and brooches with colored stones to choose from!
The choice is yours
If you select bunad silver through categories, you will see all variants of the same category of silver whether they are used for your bunad or not.
Have you inherited a brooch and wondered if you can use it? Our answer is yes.
Even if your heirloom silver doesn’t even belong to your national costume, it belongs to you. And since both the bunad and the brooch tell a bit about you, about your roots and heritage, we think you can use it.

Accessories for the bunad
Accessories such as earrings, umbrellas, hair clips etc. weren’t originally included, but many people think it’s nice to use them anyway. Earrings used to be a complete waste of time, because the ears were covered by hair or headgear and you simply couldn’t see the ears. Now it’s a bit different, and many people find it a bit “empty” with a hole in the ears without anything in them. We tend to recommend a small, discreet bunad. On the other hand, women’s knives were not entirely uncommon. It was mainly used to cut the oblique tobaccos that it was common for women to use.
