Dish Brooches
Foliage for brooches come in many shapes. They are reminiscent of foliage on trees, and are wishes for fertility. Very feminine symbolism, and symbolism has always been an important part of bunad silver. Dish foliage on the brooches was a common expression of virginity. Dish Brooches were often used as engagement gifts. This meant that the more dishes, the more the boy appreciated the fiancée. The vast majority of brooches with dish leaves are probably brooches with a rose base, but there are many others. There are also many brooches with dishes as indentations in the bottom of the brooch; these are also called dish brooches.
