Shawl attachments
Why not tie the shawl, you might ask. Often it was because the shawl would then cover a lot of the bunad silver. And the bunad silver was one of the most important signs of wealth and status, so you didn't want to cover it up.
So what did you do then? Well, you had to have something silver to attach the shawl with! Thus, the shawl attachment was born. In much the same way that some bunad coats were open and fastened with a chain from the buckle half on one side to the other buckle half on the other side. There are also many shawl attachments that are two needles or small brooches, one on each side.
