Serpent brooches

In Telemark, it was traditional hat girls used the serpent brooch, and when she got married she got a bol brooch. The serpent brooch was then moved down, and the bol brooch got the main placement on the chest. Not many people know about this tradition anymore - not even among those who sew the bunads.

The symbolism of the serpent brooch is believed to be from Norse mythology: The Midgard Serpent that lay around "the whole earth and bit its own tail".
