Buttons

Bunad buttons come in many different varieties and are an important part of bunad silver. From the simplest "fante" buttons to the more laborious Dutch buttons. Silver buttons, brass buttons and even pewter buttons are now being made. Pewter was not very common in older times - it is so soft and breaks quickly - but brass buttons were a natural part of the national silver for those who could not afford silver. And there were many. It's just that silver buttons have been preserved to a greater extent than brass ones, so we believe that "everyone" had silver buttons. Or - old silver buttons quickly look like pewter, and many people mistake that too.
